(a chapter from my book, Facing Change)
Talking to someone, especially an experienced counselor and a trusted person of truth and integrity, will help in the healing process from deep emotional pain. The open expression in a constructive manner frequently allows that deep emotional pain to bubble back to the surface and be released. [Romans 10:10 NIV] teaches: “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” We have to express ourselves by speaking our way into our freedom. We do not have to confess to a priest, but a trained counselor is frequently able to guide our progress to freedom. Choose an appropriate and ethical counselor wisely. Openly and appropriately seeking wise counsel is recommended, if you are feeling helpless and inadequate when it comes to handling your emotional pain. [John 8:31-33 NIV] … Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” “Set you free” here, in this context, means being set free from emotional pain or any chains that bind us. [2 Corinthians 3:17 NIV] says Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. [Galatians 5:1 NIV] It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. [Galatians 5:13 NIV] You, my brothers (and sisters), were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. [Romans 8:1-2 NIV] Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
