(a chapter from the section, Foundations, of my book, Heaven on Earth)
In Australia, we are besieged by constant arrival of asylum seekers seeking refuge from persecution in their country of origin. In different parts of the world, many foreigners are immigrating to UK, Europe and North America seeking better homes and better jobs. So, I will try to write generally in a way that is applicable to every nation experiencing this challenge.
Once, we were also foreigners in this land. So, be kind to all foreigners. We are constantly seeking a place of refuge, safe havens, better lives, better jobs, freedom from persecution, a place of protection, a place of opportunity. God is building Noah’s Ark on earth and all are welcome. It is a place of refuge and a place of protection, a resting place for the weary.
In the world and in the market economy, competition is supposed to make businesses more efficient and create progress. On a human level, competition is the law of the jungle. In a crowded planet, competition builds distrust amongst human beings and communities, not co-operation and collaboration. Competition does not build up people nor communities. Where inspiration, innovation and creativity are positive motivators, competition is a negative motivator. For me, competition totally de-motivates me. It takes away inspiration and dignity. It is de-humanizing and just plain exhausting.
The immigration of foreigners is used by some businesses to drive up the competition and drive down the wages. In this way, the competition between people is creating distrust, disunity and hostility between people and communities within each host nation. Competition between people is not building up a nation. Jesus Christ is in the business of healing people, communities and nations.
Every single human being has a place on earth. It is a beautiful and fruitful position that has been created for each of us by a Creator God that cares for our wellbeing. This Creator God is able to nurture and love us into our full potential, if we choose to let Him. And our full potential is a spacious place where we can live, breathe and grow in freedom. It is not a heavy burden and it is not a life in shackles. His burden is light and His yoke is easy. (Matthew 11:30 NIV)
