(a chapter from the section, Foundations, of my book, Heaven on Earth)
The waves of feminism were women’s response to community oppression of women (from both men and women). Contrary to the then popular belief, a woman is not born inferior to a man. Neither is a woman born to be a slave to a man. These were the social injustices that have been acted out against womanhood in the past, and perhaps is still acted out today in some communities. A woman is created to be loved by her husband (and vice versa), to be a companion and helper to her husband. Man and woman are created to complement each other’s strengths and to be a blessing to each other.
At the extreme cases, the violent brand of feminism has been known to promote hatred for men and disunity in the community. It is this strident cry for women’s independence and equality (perhaps even suggestions of superiority) that grates. Both social injustice and extreme feminism are distasteful to God. Both men and women should be appreciated for their strengths and weaknesses, and live in harmonious community relationships. Both men and women have equal access to God’s love, but they are not identical. Today’s men and women do not have traditionally stereotypical roles anymore. Both men and women have the freedom to choose. Both men and women are able to live lives of sacrifice for God and their family. Both men and women have a need to develop identity and grow in every area of their lives. Both men and women have the need to be fulfilled in every area of their lives. Both men and women need a personal relationship with the personal God for their nurture, love, comfort, strength and rest.
There are times when I feel the rejection of people because of the woman that I am. I forgive them and love them anyway. I am big enough to be open and vulnerable to hurt from other hurting human beings. They are hurting me out of their own hurt and brokenness. God is on my side, and with the blessings of His rest, His peace, His comfort and His strength, I quickly recover my poise and move on. I shall not camp nor dwell in hurt and offense. After all, He is a mighty God.
