Allow God to Lead

(a chapter from my book, Facing Change)

Consider the following scenarios from real life:

  1. We might have our own dreams and desires. We want to do our own thing to make it happen. We want to make history. We want to break into new territories. We want to navigate through uncharted waters. And God says: “Let Me lead …”
  2. We might be facing the wilderness of bewilderment. Everywhere we look, it looks the same. Everywhere we turn, we need clarification. And God says: “Let Me lead …”
  3. We might be experiencing sudden loss or grief. Our closest friend, parent, husband, or wife is not with us anymore. And God says: “Let Me lead …”
  4. From all appearances, our jobs, careers, and ministries are going along strongly. Suddenly, unexpectedly, a door closes in our faces. We have mortgages, families, and bills to pay. And God says: “Let Me lead …”

Allowing God to lead means we surrender that first place, highest place and that secret place in our lives to God. [Matthew 16:24-26 MSG] Allowing God to lead, as an act of obedience and submission, means allowing God to be our eyes. God can see around the corner before we navigate the bends in our lives. Not allowing God to lead can tell that we keep heading at full speed around the corner even though an oncoming truck might be heading in our direction in the wrong lane. God can see our way into the future and chart our course as we head toward our destiny. We can be assuredly confident that God has our best interests at heart. We can be assuredly satisfied that God does not say, “Do this … and I will bless you” for no reason. If God says that this action, if acted upon with faith and trust in God, will result in a blessing, then He means it. And blessings will be credited into our account if we do the action in faith, believing that God will be faithful and true to His Word.

Conversely, He does not say, “Don’t do this …” for any reason. The difference between righteousness (rightness) and unrighteousness (wrongness) is as different as day and night. And God has appointed the Lord Jesus Christ, God the Son, Son of God, to be the Judge of the World. He is a Just Judge. And God is always gracious and merciful. And He has all authority in heaven and on earth to forgive sins.

Believing in God and the Word of God and allowing God to lead is a choice. We choose to do so. However, this is a fundamental building block to faith, which is essential to living an abundant life. Some of us have yet to learn what faith-in-action looks or feels like. When we teach about our faith and God and healing takes place, that’s not brainwashing. That’s setting right, which was previously wrong. It does not mean that we are perfect or have become perfect. Only God is perfect. We are just here to be His hands and feet, to be ourselves and human.

A simple parallel comparison is like the law of gravity. The law of gravity is a fundamental law of physics. Therefore, the law of gravity is a fundamental law of life. This is the law that allows a human being to walk around. Therefore, the law of gravity is also a fundamental law of movement. A person can choose not to believe in the law of gravity but still walk around on the floor. However, when a person who does not believe in the law of gravity jumps off a tall building, it is dangerous and deadly because the law of gravity is still operating. The law of gravity does not stop us from flourishing. It is helping us to grow. In fact, if we understand the law of gravity correctly, the highboard diver can use it to somersault and flip, as can a gymnast, a skateboarder, or a skier.

There is a difference between teaching the right thing and the wrong thing. Teaching the right thing lays the foundation for the rest of the student’s life. Teaching the wrong thing may result in a downward spiral to destruction. However, no one is a failure before God, who can lift up the poor and the poor and seat them amongst princes. The Bible says that the Word of God is a firm foundation that will outlast the storms of life. [Proverbs 10:25 NLT, Luke 6:47-49 NLT]
