(a chapter from my book, Raising Kings)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Given the size and capability of the human mind, we get lost and overwhelmed in all the issues that are affecting the world today if we rely on our own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV does not imply we should not use our brains. It just means that all is not what it appears to be. There’s more than meets the eye. There’s more than meets with our human understanding.
The present issues are mountains sent to test us. Can we as humankind rise up to the challenge? God has given us faith for such a task as this.
Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.
Understanding the issues has to do with understanding the fundamental issues, not just any. Some issues are just fluff. They are not fundamental to the problem. If we want to focus, focus on the fundamental issues – the root issues. It is a matter of prioritization. How do we know what is a fundamental issue? How can we tell between fluff and the issues that are fundamental to the problem? You can follow the issue to the root issue. This is this because that is that. Then you know that this is not a fundamental issue, but that could be.
From the Bible, history tells me that crime and violence in a community are not fundamental issues but they come into existence because of idolatry and apostasy – a lack of God in the people’s lives. The Bible and historical evidence also taught me that civilizations die out (people groups just cease to exist) because of a lack of God in the people’s lives. Also from the Bible, sin in a community is not a fundamental issue but the lack of grace is, because the law of the Spirit which gives life sets you free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-4 NIV) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (1 Corinthians 15:56 NIV)
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
The law here refers to the law of Moses, e.g. the Ten Commandments. There is nothing wrong with the law. The law is perfect, but sin has perverted the law and made it into the law of sin and death. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ – the law of the Spirit – sets us free from the law of sin and death.
May the grace and peace of Abba Father the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
