Sustainable Futures

(a chapter from the section, Inspire the Future, of my book, Heaven on Earth)

I came across the idea of sustainable futures while looking for an interesting postgraduate research degree to study at this stage of my life. Why I am interested and inspired by sustainable futures is almost self-evident if we are talking about a population explosion of about fifty percent between now and 2050.

When we talk about sustainable futures, we generally mean managing our resource consumption as a response to the climate change initiative. We have seldom considered our social and ethical attitudes that are embedded in our everyday lives and daily pursuits. Principled lifestyle affects our social environment very much. Principled lifestyle breeds trust and social cohesion, whereas unprincipled lifestyle cultivates distrust and hostility. Communities filled with trustworthy people are much safer and comfortable, than communities that are rife with distrust.

In 21st century planet earth, we have rapid and constant immigration of people groups across the globe. People migrate from nation to nation in search of safe havens and plentiful jobs. We have a large mix of cultures, values, beliefs, race, religion and nations in one geographical location. There is more competition for businesses and local jobs. The local population feels the stress of the higher competition. The new migrants feel the stress of the new environment. It is a time of change. It is a time of adjustment for everybody. That is why we need principled living standards as the new common denominator and common interest. The definition of rightness and wrongness might be different between cultures and nations. But principled living standards do not change no matter where we move about in the world. Assimilation to the local culture is not a solution, even though we are advised to obey the laws of the land.

In Australia, as is in all democratic nations, we are governed by legal justice and democracy, which allocates equal rights to every single person. Some people have more needs than others. These people need a hand up because their circumstances are below the average standard of living in Australia. Some people in the world have needs but they have not the resources to help themselves. Yet others are resourced to help those in need and they should perhaps consider it their responsibility to help those people in need.

May the grace and peace of Abba Father the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Thank You, Abba Father, Lord Jesus Christ.
In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
