(a chapter from my book, Raising Kings)
But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.
Information Explosion
There is a lot of information about in the world today – in print, in magnetic and optical media, on the internet. The estimates of information doubling rate is about two to three years. We need strategies to handle and manage a lot of information.
Accurate Information
Not everything we read is accurate or valid. (3, 5) We need to keep valid information and discard invalid information. This helps us manage quantity and complexity of the information that is available. If we keep up the daily disciplines of practicing the presence of God and spending time in the Word of the Lord, we will recognize the truth when we stumble across it.
Evaluate Information
Learn to evaluate the quality of the information that you have accessed. Look at the bibliography. (5) Is the bibliography credible? If it appears to be credible, then we can proceed to read the article. Once again, if we spend a lot of time with the Truth, then we will recognize truth when we encounter it.
The Pareto Principle
The Pareto Principle (6) states that the top 20 percent of all the issues on the table will usually cover 80 percent of the work. If we want maximum payback on the time that we have invested in the work we do, work on the top 20 percent of the important issues first. This is one effective strategy that frequently works when handling a large body of information, complex problems and datelines. The Pareto Principle is frequently practiced in business, engineering and quality management circles.
